Welcome to the Office of Teacher Education

The Office of Teacher Education is within the College of Education & Human Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale which supports the preservation, transmission, and enrichment of knowledge and culture. The task of the College is to support and expand the threefold purpose of instruction, research, and public service. Furthermore, the College seeks to be a leader in a wide variety of settings--schools, industry, public and private agencies--for the promotion of a better society and improved quality of life. Within this context, the College has a major responsibility in the preparation of persons for leadership roles throughout the human services professions, including those in education, health and leisure, social work, rehabilitation, and business and industry.

The Office of Teacher Education considers the process for becoming a reflective educator as beginning during a teacher's undergraduate preparation for initial teacher certification and continuing throughout his or her professional career. Effective teaching is characterized by interactions with students to present subject matter, followed by informed reflection on these interactions and presentations. Teachers should make decisions among methods and content based on their competence in both subject matter and pedagogy, rather than acting as technicians following a predetermined curriculum.
